Associate Professor Julie Hussin, a renowned Canadian scientist and expert in data analysis and artificial intelligence, visited the University of Economics in Bratislava, where she gave a lecture and discussion with students on February 12, 2025. Julie Hussin is an associate professor at the Université de Montréal, where she leads the master's program in bioinformatics. In her research, she specializes in the processing of large data sets and the development of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence algorithms, emphasizing their fairness and practical applicability.
The lecture was facilitated by the Embassy of Canada in Slovakia and opened by the Ambassador of Canada, H.E. Karen Mollica. In her speech, Associate Professor Hussin emphasized that data is the essential “ingredient” for the successful application of artificial intelligence, and if the input data contains errors or is incomplete, the results of AI are automatically distorted. She also pointed out the need to improve the quality and representativeness of data sets so that artificial intelligence is not only accurate, but also fair to different groups of the population.
At the end of the lecture, she emphasized the importance of ethics and transparency in artificial intelligence applications, calling for a responsible approach to the creation and implementation of data models. The audience also appreciated her practical examples, which pointed out the real benefits and challenges of this technology. The discussion with the students also touched on questions about the use of AI in everyday life and brought together valuable experiences from Canada.
